Privacy Policy
Last updated March 21st, 2026
CoverageMap LLC ("CoverageMap," "we," "us," or "our") operates CoverageMap.com and the CoverageMap mobile application (collectively, the "Services"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices available to you.
By using the Services, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Account Information
When you create an account, you may register using your Apple ID or Google account. Through this process, we receive:
- Email address
- Username
You may also use the Services without creating an account. In that case, we do not collect account information, but we may still collect usage and technical data as described below.
1.2 Speed Test and Network Data
When you run a speed test or signal strength measurement through the CoverageMap app, we collect:
- Download and upload speeds
- Latency and signal strength readings
- Network connection technology (e.g., 4G LTE, 5G)
- Mobile carrier or internet service provider name
- Device type and model number
- Internal IP address
- External IP address
- Precise GPS coordinates at the time of the test
- Timestamp of the measurement
1.3 Passive Background Data Collection (Upcoming Feature)
In a future release of the CoverageMap mobile app, you will have the option to contribute cellular signal strength data passively while the app runs in the background. This feature will be:
- Off by default
- Opt-in only, presented during the app onboarding flow and available in app settings at any time
- Revocable at any time by toggling the setting off in the app
When enabled, background data collection captures signal strength information from your device's cellular radio on an ongoing basis. All data collected through this feature is subject to the same handling practices described in this Privacy Policy.
1.4 Location Data
We collect precise GPS location data when you run a speed test or, if enabled, through passive background collection. Location data is essential to the core function of our Services — building an accurate map of cellular and internet coverage. You may revoke location permissions at any time through your device's operating system settings, though doing so will limit your ability to contribute to the coverage map.
1.5 Device Permissions
The CoverageMap app may request the following device permissions:
- Location (precise, foreground): required to tag speed tests with a geographic position
- Location (background): required only if you opt into passive background signal collection
- Phone state (Android only): used to read carrier name and network connection type
You may modify these permissions at any time in your device's operating system settings.
1.6 Analytics and Crash Reporting
We use Google Analytics within the embedded web browser of our mobile app to understand how users navigate the Services. Google Analytics collects information such as pages visited, time spent on each page, and general usage patterns. Google Analytics may collect its own identifiers as part of this process. For information about how Google handles this data, please review Google's Privacy Policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
We have entered into a Data Processing Agreement with Google governing its handling of data collected through Google Analytics on our behalf.
1.7 Information Collected Automatically
When you access the Services, we may automatically collect standard web server log data, including browser type, operating system, referring URLs, and IP address. This information is used for security, diagnostics, and aggregate analytics.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To operate, maintain, and improve the Services
- To build and update crowdsourced cellular and home internet coverage maps
- To create anonymized and aggregated datasets for licensing to third-party businesses through our Coverage API and custom dataset offerings
- To serve in-app promotions and targeted advertisements based on network and provider data (see Section 4)
- To respond to your inquiries and provide customer support
- To analyze usage patterns and improve user experience
- To detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, security incidents, and abuse
- To comply with applicable legal obligations
3. Anonymization and Data De-identification
Before we share or license data to third parties, we remove or exclude the following categories of information:
- IP addresses (internal and external)
- Precise GPS coordinates (replaced with broader geographic designations)
- Unique device identifiers
- User account information (email address, username)
Data shared or sold to third parties contains only broad location information (e.g., county or census tract level) and device, cellular, and network telemetry. We do not intentionally share or sell personally identifiable information to third parties.
Please note that we retain raw data — including precise GPS coordinates and IP addresses — on our internal systems for service operation and improvement purposes. Raw data associated with your account is deleted when you delete your account.
4. In-App Advertising and Targeted Promotions
We may use network and carrier data collected through the Services to serve targeted in-app promotions or advertisements on behalf of telecommunications providers and other companies. For example, if your device data indicates you are on a particular cellular network, we may display an offer from that carrier or a competing carrier within the app.
This type of advertising uses data derived from your use of the Services. We do not share your personally identifiable information (such as your email address or name) with advertisers. Advertisers receive only the benefit of ad delivery to relevant audiences within the app.
This activity constitutes "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law. California residents have the right to opt out of this sharing. See Section 9 (Your Privacy Rights) for details.
5. How We Share Your Information
5.1 Anonymized Data Licensing
We license anonymized, aggregated datasets to third-party businesses through our Coverage API and custom dataset program. These datasets do not include IP addresses, precise GPS coordinates, device identifiers, or user account information.
5.2 Service Providers
We share information with third-party vendors that provide services on our behalf, including cloud hosting, analytics, and crash reporting. These vendors are contractually restricted from using your information for any purpose other than providing services to us.
5.3 In-App Advertising Partners
As described in Section 4, we may use your network and device data to facilitate targeted in-app promotions on behalf of third-party advertisers. This use constitutes "selling" or "sharing" of personal information under certain state privacy laws.
5.4 Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required to do so by law, regulation, or valid legal process, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of CoverageMap, our users, or the public.
5.5 Business Transfers
In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or a portion of our assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you via email or prominent notice on the Services prior to your information becoming subject to a different privacy policy.
6. Data Retention
We retain raw speed test and signal data indefinitely unless you delete it. You may delete individual speed tests through the CoverageMap app or website, or delete your entire account, which results in permanent deletion of all data associated with your account. Account deletion is irreversible.
Anonymized and aggregated data that has already been incorporated into licensed datasets may persist independently of your account, as it is no longer linked to you.
7. Data Storage and International Transfers
Your data is stored on servers located in the United States. Network requests to and from the Services may route through servers in other countries depending on your geographic location and network path. We take appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data in transit.
8. Children's Privacy
The Services are not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at privacy@coveragemap.com and we will take steps to delete that information. We encourage parents and guardians to monitor their children's use of online services.
9. Your Privacy Rights
9.1 All Users
Regardless of where you live, you have the following rights with respect to your personal information:
- Access: you may request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
- Correction: you may request that we correct inaccurate information
- Deletion: you may delete individual speed tests in the app or on the website, or delete your entire account
- Withdraw Consent: where our data processing is based on your consent (e.g., background data collection), you may withdraw consent at any time through app settings
9.2 California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA):
- Right to Know: you may request that we disclose the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the categories of sources, the business or commercial purpose for collecting or selling it, and the categories of third parties with whom we share it
- Right to Delete: you may request deletion of your personal information, subject to certain exceptions
- Right to Correct: you may request correction of inaccurate personal information
- Right to Opt Out of Sale or Sharing: you have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. See the instructions below.
- Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information: precise geolocation data is classified as sensitive personal information under CPRA. You have the right to limit our use of your precise geolocation data to purposes necessary to perform the Services. To exercise this right, use the opt-out link below or contact us at privacy@coveragemap.com.
- Right to Non-Discrimination: we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your privacy rights
To opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information, or to limit use of your sensitive personal information, please submit a request at:

We will process your request within 15 business days of receipt. We will honor your opt-out for a minimum of 12 months before requesting that you reconsider.

9.3 Nevada Residents
Nevada residents may opt out of the sale of certain personal information under Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 603A. To submit a request, contact us at privacy@coveragemap.com.
10. California Data Broker Registration
To the extent CoverageMap's data licensing activities constitute operation as a "data broker" under California Civil Code Section 1798.99.80, we register annually with the California Attorney General's office in compliance with that statute.
11. Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. Third-Party Links and Services
The Services may contain links to third-party websites or integrate third-party services. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those third parties. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you access.
13. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email (if you have an account) or by posting a notice on the Services prior to the change becoming effective. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically.
