Frequently asked questions
How does the browser speed test work?
The test uses CoverageMap’s custom speed test protocol and infrastructure over secure connections to measure your latency, then your download and upload throughput against the nearest available server.
What do latency and jitter mean?
Latency (ping) is the round-trip time for data to reach the server and come back, measured in milliseconds. Jitter is the variation in that latency over time. Lower values are better for calls, gaming, and video.
Can I choose which server I test against?
Yes. The test automatically selects the nearest server, but you can open the server picker to choose any server in our network before starting a test.
Why does my speed test result differ from my plan’s advertised speed?
Advertised speeds are typically the maximum your plan can reach under ideal conditions. Real-world results depend on Wi-Fi signal quality, router hardware, network congestion, the number of devices sharing your connection, and the distance between your device and the server. For the most accurate result, test on a wired Ethernet connection and close other apps that use the internet.
How do I get the most accurate result?
For best accuracy, connect your device directly to your router via Ethernet, close background apps and browser tabs, and run the test a few times at different times of day. Wireless connections and VPNs can significantly reduce measured speeds.
What is a good internet speed?
For most households, 25 Mbps download is enough for HD streaming on one device. 100 Mbps handles several simultaneous streams or video calls, and 500 Mbps+ is ideal for heavy multi-user households or frequent large file transfers. For online gaming, latency below 50 ms matters more than raw download speed.
Can I use this speed test on mobile?
Yes. The test runs entirely in your browser and works on smartphones and tablets. For cellular connections, keep in mind that results will vary based on signal strength, carrier congestion, and your location. The CoverageMap app can also log speed test results tied to your GPS location for crowd-sourced coverage data.
