What is signal mapping?

Carrier coverage maps show what a network is predicted to do. Signal mapping shows what your phone actually receives. As you move, the app samples the cellular connection and records the reception at each location, building a picture of real coverage instead of a modelled one.

Every reading is uploaded and processed in real time, so the measurements you collect show up on the Crowdsourced Map within minutes, next to contributions from users around the world.

Signal Mapping Features

Everything is designed around one idea: collect the most useful data possible while asking almost nothing of you or your phone.

Background Mapping

Let the app collect cell telemetry in the background and every commute, errand, and road trip turns into coverage data on its own. It stays your call: leave background mapping on, limit mapping to when the app is open, or turn it off completely.

Dual-SIM Mapping

If your phone has two active SIMs, both are mapped in parallel. A single trip produces a full set of readings for each carrier, with no switching back and forth between lines.

Roaming-Aware Attribution

Every reading is credited to the network your phone is actually connected to. Travel internationally on a local eSIM and your data lands under that roaming carrier instead of your home one.

Battery-Efficient by Design

Sampling and uploads are tuned and batched so mapping stays out of the way. Leaving signal mapping on all day has an impact on battery life you are unlikely to notice.

Exclusion Zones

Mark the areas you would rather keep off the map, like your home or your workplace. Mapping pauses the moment you enter a zone and resumes on its own once you leave.

Tower Data, Collected Today

Detailed tower information is already recorded with every reading. Tower mapping has not launched on the map yet, but when it does, all of the tower data collected up to that point comes with it.

Smart Duplicate Detection

Mapping the same parking space five hundred times helps nobody. Signal mapping fingerprints every reading against five values and only maps a location again when one of them changes.

You get a leaner dataset, far less uploading from your device, and a map that tracks genuine change instead of repetition.

Remap Distance

Decide how far you need to travel before nearby ground counts as new territory worth mapping again.

Recheck Interval

Decide how long an area you have already mapped stays settled before it becomes eligible for a fresh reading.

Tracked per location

When this combination stays the same, the reading is skipped. When any part of it changes, the location is mapped again.

FAQs

Is signal mapping available on iPhone?

No. Signal mapping is Android only, because iOS does not give apps access to the cellular telemetry it depends on. iPhone users can still contribute by running speed tests in the CoverageMap app.

Do I have to keep the app open while mapping?

No. Signal mapping can run in the background, so it keeps collecting cell telemetry while you use other apps or leave your phone in your pocket. Background mapping is optional, though: you can limit mapping to only when the app is open, or turn it off completely.

Will signal mapping drain my battery?

Signal mapping is heavily optimized for efficiency. Sampling and uploads are batched and scheduled so continuous mapping has a negligible impact on your battery life.

Can I run speed tests while signal mapping is on?

Yes. Speed testing and signal mapping run alongside each other, so you can start a speed test, or leave recurring tests running, without pausing signal mapping or losing readings. Both sets of results are contributed to the Crowdsourced Map.

What happens if my phone has two SIMs?

Both SIMs are mapped at the same time. One trip produces a complete set of readings for each carrier, so you never have to switch between lines to map them.

What happens when I travel internationally?

Readings are attributed to the network you are actually connected to. If you travel abroad and use an international eSIM, your measurements are correctly credited to that roaming carrier.

Will I map the same place over and over again?

No. Signal mapping tracks the combination of your location, carrier, tower, frequency, and network technology, and only maps a location again when one of those values changes. You can also configure the distance used for that check and how often an already-mapped area is rechecked.

What kind of data does signal mapping collect?

Every reading is a snapshot of your cellular connection at one moment in time: when it was captured, where you were, your elevation, and how you were moving, along with the carrier and SIM in use, whether you were roaming, and the network technology and frequency band you were connected to. It also includes the radio measurements themselves, such as signal strength and quality, plus identifiers for the cell serving you and the neighboring cells your phone could see. Basic device and app details, like your phone model and Android version, are recorded so readings can be compared fairly across different hardware. Readings are linked to your account so you get credit for what you contribute, and they appear on the public map without identifying you.

Can I stop the app from mapping my home?

Yes. Exclusion zones let you define areas such as your home or workplace where mapping is turned off automatically, and collection resumes once you leave the zone. This processing is done on device and is never uploaded to our servers.

What happens to my data if I delete my account?

If you are signed in, deleting your CoverageMap account permanently deletes all of the data you have uploaded. Every signal reading tied to your account is removed from our system for good, not simply hidden or unlinked from your profile.

Are you mapping cell towers yet?

Not yet. Tower information is already being collected alongside every signal reading, and when tower mapping launches, all of the tower data gathered up to that point will be included.
