Overview

What is the CoverageMap API?

The CoverageMap API is a REST API that reports how good cellular service is at any location in the United States. Send latitude/longitude coordinates, or street addresses, and get back what the coverage and performance looks like in the given area.

Every response is scoped to the carriers and technologies you ask for. Pick AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile, choose LTE, 5G or both, and select the datasets you want with a single field in the request body.

The API supports batch requests, so you can send a list of locations and get a single response with all the data you need. All with simple billing by the location and dataset. Setup is easy and can be done in minutes.

Datasets

What are the Datasets?

3 datasets are available today. Coverage is what each carrier reports to the FCC. Speed tests are what everyday users measured on their devices. Summary scores distill both into simple 0 to 10 ratings. All three are available on all plans.

  • Carrier summary card ranking Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T with 0 to 10 scores at one location

    Carrier Summary

    summary
    Cost: 1 unit per location

A simple 0 to 10 score that ranks how the carriers perform at each location.

    • An overall score that ranks the carriers
    • Performance, coverage and reliability scores
    • Scored using FCC data and user speed tests
    • Provides helpful sourcing and accuracy
  • FCC signal strength of -84.5 dBm at a location with 0.5 km, 1 km and 2 km radius rings

    FCC Coverage and Signal Strength

    fcc-coverage
    Cost: 1 unit per location

Modeled coverage from the FCC Broadband Data Collection, cleaned up and normalized so carriers are comparable. Returned per carrier and/or per technology.

    • Signal strength in dBm at the exact point
    • Signal strength within 0.5 km, 1 km and 2 km radii
    • Area covered within 0.5 km, 1 km and 2 km radii
    • Always up to date with the latest FCC data
  • Speed test card showing download, upload and latency from 22 nearby tests

    Crowdsourced Speed Tests

    speed-tests
    Cost: 2 units per location

Real-world latency, download and upload results from CoverageMap app users near each location, aggregated into summary statistics for quick analysis and comparison.

    • Latency, download and upload speeds
    • Sample counts and failed test counts
    • Accuracy and distance fields for speed tests
    • Rolled up at 0.5 km, 1 km and 2 km radii
Features

What is included?

What the CoverageMap API includes on every plan.

Dataset selection
Pick FCC coverage, user speed tests, summary scores or any mix of them on every request you send. You only pay for the datasets you're using.
Batch requests
Send up to 100 locations in a single POST request and get one JSON response with all the results.
Coordinates and addresses
Lookup coverage based on latitude and longitude pairs or by plain street addresses. Mix and match as needed.
The three national carriers
Access all major US carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) across LTE and 5G. Regional carriers are available on Enterprise.
Measured speeds
Crowdsourced latency, download and upload numbers from real devices, with sample counts. See what real people are actually experiencing.
Usage based billing
Units are counted per location per dataset on one Pay-Per-Use plan, with no tiers to monitor or switch between as usage grows. Watch usage in your dashboard and request only what you need.

What is a unit?

  • FCC coverage lookup1 unit per location
  • Speed test lookup2 units per location
  • Summary lookup1 unit per location

A unit is one location looked up in one dataset. Pay-Per-Use includes the first 50 units in the $49 monthly fee and bills each further unit at the rate of the tier it falls in, so there is one plan and no tiers to monitor or switch between as usage grows. Every location successfully returned without an error is billed, and speed tests only where speed test data is found.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about the API.

Who's this API for?

The CoverageMap API is for developers, businesses, and organizations who need to integrate coverage and speed test data into their products. If you have an application, service, or website that could benefit from knowing where people can get coverage and what their download speeds are, this API is for you.

What does a request look like?

A single POST to the coverage endpoint with a JSON body containing the datasets you want (fcc-coverage, speed-tests, summary or any mix), the providers and technologies to include, and a list of up to 100 locations. Each location can be a latitude and longitude pair or a street address. Include your API key as a Bearer token in the Authorization header.

What is the summary dataset?

The summary dataset turns the FCC coverage and crowdsourced speed test data into simple 0 to 10 scores for overall quality, performance, coverage and reliability at each location. It costs 1 unit per location and tells you whether the scores were measured from nearby speed tests or estimated from FCC data alone, so you can show a quick rating without interpreting the raw numbers yourself.

How are units counted?

A unit is one location looked up in one dataset. An FCC coverage lookup is 1 unit per location, a speed test lookup is 2 units per location and a summary lookup is 1 unit per location, so requesting all three datasets is 4 units per location. Every location returned without an error is billed, even if no coverage exists there, but speed tests are only billed for a location where speed test data is found.

What does the free trial include?

The free trial includes 500 units per month with all three datasets and up to 100 locations per request, the same batch limit as every other plan. It lasts one month, has a hard cap rather than usage charges, and does not require a credit card. The trial is for evaluation only and cannot be used for any commercial or non-commercial purpose.

Which carriers and technologies are supported?

AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile across LTE and 5G. Regional carriers are available on the Enterprise plan.

Which countries are supported?

The CoverageMap API covers the United States today. More countries will become available in the future.

Where does the data come from?

Coverage and signal strength come from the FCC Broadband Data Collection, cleaned and normalized by our processing pipeline so carriers are comparable. Speed test data comes from real users running tests in the CoverageMap app. Summary scores are computed from both of those datasets.

Can I cache or store responses?

Yes, on Pay-Per-Use and Enterprise, but only while your subscription is active. You can persist and cache responses in your own systems following the terms of your license. Once you unsubscribe, you must delete all stored data, and any references to it, from your application and systems. Data from the free trial may only be used to evaluate the API.

How is Pay-Per-Use billed?

Pay-Per-Use is one plan with no tiers to monitor or switch between. The $49 monthly fee includes the first 50 units. Each further unit is billed at the rate of the tier it falls in: $0.50 for units 51 to 250, $0.20 for 251 to 1,000, $0.10 for 1,001 to 10,000 and $0.05 for every unit above 10,000. For example, 1,250 units in a month costs $324. The free trial stops at its cap instead of charging for usage. If you regularly use more than 25,000 units a month, contact us for Enterprise pricing.
