Explore the technical details, data coverage, and real-world use cases so your team can plan a confident rollout.
What is the CoverageMap API?
The CoverageMap API is a REST API that returns, for any list of United States locations, FCC coverage and signal strength data for each carrier and technology, crowdsourced real-world speed test data measured by CoverageMap users nearby, and summary scores that distill both into simple 0 to 10 ratings. Send coordinates or street addresses, choose the datasets, carriers and technologies you need, and receive a single JSON response for the whole batch.
It is built for production workflows: batch requests of up to 100 locations, predictable per-location billing, automatic FCC data refreshes, and enterprise options for regional carriers, volume discounts, service level agreements and dedicated support.
Data is available for AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile across LTE and 5G. Additional and regional carriers are included on Enterprise agreements.
Datasets
Datasets are selected per request with the datasets field, so you only pay for what you use.
- fcc-coverage (1 unit per location): signal strength in dBm at the location and averaged within 0.5 km, 1 km and 2 km, plus the share of each radius that has coverage. Sourced from the FCC Broadband Data Collection and normalized by our processing pipeline.
- speed-tests (2 units per location): latency, download and upload with min, median, average and max, sample counts, failed test counts, an accuracy flag, the distance to the tests used, and the same summary at 0.5 km, 1 km and 2 km.
- summary (1 unit per location): simple 0 to 10 scores for overall quality, performance, coverage and reliability, computed from the FCC coverage and speed test data behind the scenes, with flags for full coverage and whether the scores are measured or estimated.
Sample Request
Authenticate with an Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY header and send a JSON body with the datasets, providers, technologies and locations you want. Locations can be latitude and longitude pairs or street addresses, which we geocode for you.

| speedTest.*.halfKilometer, oneKilometer, twoKilometers | The same summary statistics rolled up at each radius |
| summary.overall | A single 0 to 10 score that blends coverage, reliability and performance, with coverage weighted most |
| summary.performance | 0 to 10, based on the speeds and response times from nearby speed tests and how often they fail, falling back to FCC data when there are no nearby tests |
| summary.coverage | 0 to 10, based on FCC coverage and how often nearby speed tests got a usable connection |
| summary.reliability | 0 to 10, based on the slowest speed tests people ran near the location together with FCC signal strength and coverage, falling back to FCC data when there are no nearby tests |
| summary.isFullyCovered | True when the FCC reports the whole area within 0.5 km as covered |
| summary.source | "measured" when speed test data was used, "estimated" when the scores come from FCC data alone |
| summary.accuracy | How close the speed tests used were to the location: exact, high, medium or low. Null when the summary is estimated |
Billing Units
Usage is measured in units per location per dataset. An FCC coverage lookup is 1 unit, a speed test lookup is 2 units, a summary lookup is 1 unit, and requesting all three datasets is 4 units per location. Every location returned without an error is billed, even when no coverage exists there, but speed tests are only billed for a location where speed test data is found.
Pricing
A unit is one location looked up in one dataset: an FCC coverage lookup is 1 unit, a speed test lookup is 2 units and a summary lookup is 1 unit. Every plan includes all three datasets, LTE and 5G, and AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

What is a unit?
- FCC coverage lookup1 unit per location
- Speed test lookup2 units per location
- Summary lookup1 unit per location
A unit is one location looked up in one dataset. Pay-Per-Use includes the first 50 units in the $49 monthly fee and bills each further unit at the rate of the tier it falls in, so there is one plan and no tiers to monitor or switch between as usage grows. Every location successfully returned without an error is billed, and speed tests only where speed test data is found.
Pay-Per-Use rates
| Units per month | Rate per unit |
|---|---|
| 0 to 50 | 50 units included |
| 51 to 250 | $0.50 |
| 251 to 1,000 | $0.20 |
| 1,001 to 10,000 | $0.10 |
| 10,001 and up | $0.05 |

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the free trial include?
The free trial includes 500 units per month with all three datasets and up to 100 locations per request. It lasts one month, stops at its cap instead of charging for usage, and does not require a credit card. The trial is for evaluation only and cannot be used for any commercial or non-commercial purpose.
How are units counted?
Units are per location per dataset. An FCC coverage lookup is 1 unit, a speed test lookup is 2 units, a summary lookup is 1 unit, and requesting all three datasets is 4 units per location. Every location returned without an error is billed, even if no coverage exists there, but speed tests are only billed for a location where speed test data is found.
How many locations can I send in one request?
Every plan allows 100 locations per request, including the free trial. Larger lists are processed by sending several requests.
How is Pay-Per-Use billed?
Pay-Per-Use is one plan with no tiers to monitor or switch between. The $49 monthly fee includes the first 50 units, and each further unit is billed at the rate of the tier it falls in: $0.50 for units 51 to 250, $0.20 for 251 to 1,000, $0.10 for 1,001 to 10,000 and $0.05 for every unit above 10,000. For example, 1,250 units in a month costs $324.
Which carriers and technologies are supported?
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile across LTE and 5G. Additional and regional carriers are available on Enterprise agreements.
What do volume discounts look like?
Pay-Per-Use has no usage limit, but above 25,000 units per month we recommend Enterprise. We build a custom rate card with lower per-unit pricing, committed volumes and annual terms if you prefer them. Tell us your expected monthly usage and we will send a quote.
Do you offer SLAs and dedicated support?
Yes. Enterprise agreements include uptime and response time commitments, a named support contact, and help with integration, procurement and compliance reviews.
Can I store and cache the data?
Yes, on Pay-Per-Use and Enterprise, but only while your subscription is active. You may persist, cache and store API responses in your own infrastructure under the terms of your license agreement. Once you unsubscribe, you must delete all stored data, and any references to it, from your application and systems. Data from the free trial may only be used to evaluate the API.
How do we ensure data accuracy?
Coverage and signal strength come from the FCC Broadband Data Collection and pass through our processing pipeline, which corrects inaccuracies and normalizes values between carriers. Speed test data comes from real devices running tests in the CoverageMap app and includes sample counts and accuracy flags so you can judge each result.
Can I track my usage?
Yes. Usage is available in real time from your dashboard, broken down day by day and by dataset.
What countries are supported?
The CoverageMap API is available in the United States today.
