CoverageMap API

Units and billing

How CoverageMap API requests are counted in units, what is billed, the free trial and Pay-Per-Use rates.

The CoverageMap API is billed in units. A unit is one location looked up in one dataset, however many providers or technologies you ask for.

Units per dataset

Units per dataset
DatasetUnits per location
fcc-coverage1
speed-tests2
summary1
All three4

For example, 10 locations with all three datasets in one request use 40 units: 10 for FCC coverage, 20 for speed tests and 10 for the summary. If only 6 of those locations have speed test data, the request uses 32 units.

What is billed

  • FCC coverage and the summary, for every location returned without an error when you requested them. A location with no FCC coverage is still billed for both.
  • Speed tests, only for a location where speed test data was found for at least one provider and technology.
  • Repeat requests for the same location, each time they are made.

What is not billed

  • Rejected requests, such as a malformed body, an unknown provider or more than 100 locations.
  • Locations returned with an error, such as an address that could not be found.
  • Speed tests for a location with no speed test data, where speedTest is null on every coverage entry.
  • A dataset that was temporarily unavailable for the whole response. It comes back as null on every coverage entry.
  • Requests to the List countries and List providers endpoints.

Note

Before any work starts, the API checks that the whole batch fits in your remaining allowance, counting every location at the full rate. A request that does not fit is rejected without using any units.

Free trial

The free trial includes 500 units across all three datasets for one month, with the same 100 locations per request as paid plans and no credit card. It stops at its cap instead of charging for usage. When the trial ends the subscription closes; upgrade to Pay-Per-Use from the Products or Subscriptions page of the dashboard at any time, and your API keys keep working.

Evaluation only

The free trial is for evaluating the API and cannot be used for any commercial or non-commercial purpose. See free trial use.

Pay-Per-Use rates

Pay-Per-Use costs $49 a month, which includes the first 50 units. Each further unit is billed at the rate of the tier it falls in:

Pay-Per-Use rates
Units per monthRate per unit
0 to 5050 units included
51 to 250$0.50
251 to 1,000$0.20
1,001 to 10,000$0.10
10,001 and up$0.05

If you regularly use more than 25,000 units a month, the Enterprise plan adds volume discounts. See pricing to compare plans and estimate your cost.

Tracking usage

Usage is tracked per day and updated as requests complete. See your usage and costs in the Subscriptions section of the Enterprise dashboard and past periods under Invoices.
